Ostaritutkimuksia (free translation: Shopping Centre Investigations) is an artistic and curatorial research process focusing on the old shopping centres in Helsinki. Many of the suburban shopping centres built between 1950s and 1970s are facing partial or total demolition within the next few decades and are currently under going remodelling and re-zoning processes.
The research–compiled by artist Salla Valle and artist-curator Miina Pohjolainen– addresses the shopping centres through the lens of economic mutations and focuses on mapping how the ongoing global knowledge-based economization is effecting the local shopping centres, their current imaginaries and futures. Would it be possible to imagine and approach the shopping centres as spaces not steered by the paradigm of constant growth but rather by social and ecological sustainability?Shopping Mall Investigations (Miina Pohjolainen and Salla Valle) invited visual artist Nikki Jääskeläinen, visual artist and sculptor Saara-Maria Kariranta and PWSC (Shubhangi Singh and Kush Badhwar) to work on site in the art and research space in Konalanvuori shopping mall during July and August 2022.
The architecturally distinctive shopping center of Konalanvuori was completed in 1961 and designed by Erkki Karvinen, known for his mall architecture. The future of the building is uncertain and there have been discussions of its demolition for a long time. -
At Konalanvuoren ostoskeskus, PWSC builds on a growing affinity with the pizzeria and community-hub, Dilber, to create site-specific works in the form of printed pizza boxes (two prints in editions of 60 each) that get distributed to the pizzeria's take-away customers as well as karaoke videos that reflect on the pizza shop, the shopping center and changing the Konala area. The karaoke video is set in the restaurant utilizing the site's existing infrastructure.
